Presidential Search Update

December 08, 2025

Dear members of the Columbia community:

We are writing to share a brief update on the search for the next President of Columbia University.

The Presidential Search Committee continues its work with diligence and care, guided by the values that define our community. We are encouraged by the depth and quality of the applicant pool, which reflects both the University’s strong reputation and position and the broad appeal of this leadership opportunity. Each candidate’s experience, values, and vision are being reviewed through a rigorous and thoughtful evaluation process. We are making excellent progress and are excited by the pool of candidates.

Given the importance of this decision, we will extend this process beyond the start of the new year to take the time to fully understand each candidate’s strengths and potential fit. This additional time will help us to identify the individual best suited to lead Columbia into its next era.

We thank Acting President Claire Shipman for her continued outstanding leadership and steady hand in guiding the University as the Committee continues its work.

We look forward to providing another update and sharing more about our progress in early 2026, and we remain grateful for your patience and support.

Sincerely,

David J. Greenwald
